Headlined by one of the Legislature’s openly gay lawmakers Sen. Mark Leno (D-San Francisco), the resolution passed with the Senate voting 18 to 14 and the Assembly 44 to 27. On Thursday, a hearing will take place at the California Supreme Court in which judges will hear arguments for and against the ballot measure approved this past November.
Democrats argue that the resolution enforces constitutional democracy and protection for minorities from discrimination while Republicans see it as further politicization of the the issue a few days before a public hearing.
